Archives 1976-1977
Introduction
Back in the “States” the country celebrated its Bicentennial, and in November elected Jimmy Carter president. In 1977, Pres. Carter pardoned the Vietnam War draft evaders. Elvis Presley died at the age of 42.
The students of Nürnberg American High School were probably more interested in the many sports teams and sports-related events. Football led the way, as usual. It was a losing season (2-4-1), but the students enjoyed a week of activities, including the Powder Puff game, pie throwing, tug-of-war, egg catching, a pep rally and bonfire, a dance, and a thrilling come-from-behind field goal victory over Augsberg, 23-21.
Basketball was next in importance. Coach Tom Gussner tells the story of the 9-5 season in the Memorabilia file. The women’s basketball team had a similar winning record, 10-4.
The other sports included Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams, a Women’s Volleyball team, and both Varsity and Junior Varsity Wrestling teams.
During the Activity Period, students participated in a large variety of different clubs and activities. An important activity was the Cooperative Work Experience designed to introduce students to the world of work. A memorable event was a Christmas pageant, “The Star of Bethlehem.” Some newer kinds of clubs included the Vocational Industrial Club of America, the Human Ecology Club, the Ethnic Studies Club, and a Computer Club.
Although there was both a high school and a junior high school newspaper during this school year, no copies of these newspapers are extant. Information about the school year came entirely from the yearbook.
You can recall more memories of this school year by taking a look at the two files that follow.
The Memorabilia file is from Coach Tom Gussner and former journalism teacher Bob McQuitty. It includes the basketball season and O’Dillard Johnson’s connection to Magic Johnson.
