Archives 1977-1978
As their school year began, NHS students may have been aware that Elvis Presley died of a drug overdose in August and in September the U.S. signed a treaty with Panama to transfer control of the Panama Canal.
But it is more likely that they were more excited about the beginning of the 1977-78 school year. Approximately 600 students were enrolled in grades 9-12. According to the yearbook, 68 students lived in the dorm. The Varsity football team had a disappointing season with 2 wins and 5 losses, but the Junior Varsity was undefeated, winning all seven games. Sports kept many students busy as there were football, track, basketball, soccer, and wrestling teams for the boys, and track, volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics teams for the girls. Track star Bob Davis received special notice in the yearbook. He was third in Germany and seventh in a European international meet. Also noticed was the active ROTC program, which included a cadet chorus.
There were two school newspapers in 1977-78, the Trichter, and a junior high paper called Eaglette. Only one paper, the June 10, senior issue of the Trichter is extant. No junior high papers are extant.
You can read more about the events of this school year in the following documents. Unfortunately, no memorabilia have been submitted to the Archives.
