Archives 1964-1965
During the summer of 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed two bills that enhanced the Civil Rights of all Americans.
At Nürnberg American High School the students of the 1964-65 school year saw enrollment increase once again, to 954 in grades 7-12, well above 1963-64’s 795.
The sports enthusiasts celebrated Nürnberg’s second Class B 11-man football championship. The first championship occurred in 1961. Both teams were coached by Cletus Campbell. In 1952, the Eagles won a 6-man football championship. In basketball, NHS did not fare as well as a team, but Ralph Kemper averaged 34 points a game in the championship tournament and was named to the All-Star team.
Under the advice and encouragement of the late Joe Ferguson, NHS enjoyed something of a media blitz. Ferguson was advisor for the long-standing Eagle radio program, “Strictly for Teens,” AND the Trichter. He also found time to direct the school play “The Heiress,” and produce a creative writing booklet called “Silhouette.” Not to be outdone, the dorm students published their own newspaper, unassisted.
The fifties hit, a Sadie Hawkins Day dance, was resuscitated and also an event first introduced in 1960, Eagle Week, was brought back. All this activity occurred while Principal George Stevens was in the United States recruiting USAREUR teachers for the next school year.
115 seniors graduated in June, a record number.
